The jet-skiers had started to race around the boats, rocking them violently. At first, Fliss was frightened Belle might capsize. Then she was just plain angry.
The tourists must know how close to the reef they were. It was impossible to ignore the change in sea colour, from deep blue to brilliant turquoise. Fliss wished she was back there, in the safety of the shallow water. But she had to save Spinner. If she didnât ⦠she couldnât bear to think about it.
But first she had to stop the tourists from ruining the rescue.
Fliss staggered into the cabin and gripped on to the boatâs wheel to steady herself. She looked at the basic controls. If she could find a phone or radio she might be able to get a signal to someone on Payocos. They could send help right away.
âCome on, come on!â she said to herself, looking around desperately. âThereâs got to be something here.â
But there was no radio. What was she going to do?
âThink, Fliss!â she said. âWhat would a vet do?â
Animals canât tell humans what the matter is, so vets have to think fast and make decisions using whatever information they have. Thatâs how Fliss saw this situation. She had to make do with what she had. And what she had was a fishing boat with little on board other than a tub of smelly fish bait.
Just then, the girl on the jet-ski zoomed close, unaware of the creatures she was putting in danger. Fliss would have loved to throw that bucket of stinky fish guts all over her!
Ahaâ¦
Fliss dragged the bucket to the edge of the boat. She had a plan. And if it worked, she would be back with Spinner very soon.
As the three jet-skis roared nearer, Fliss took a handful of fish bait â old guts and tails and skin and scales â and threw it. And then another. And another. Fliss was only trying to get the jet-skiersâ attention, but the fish bait landed with a splat on their faces, necks and shoulders. In horror, they came to a sudden stop. They stared at her.
